So today, I’m going to be addressing a topic that I’ve wanted to speak about for a very long time. Because this topic is very near and dear to my heart and I honestly see a lot of believers abuse it.
This topic is on discernment. So please grab a drink and some snacks, because I’m about to address and rant on a few things..
So basically, when I first got saved, I had a mature believer at that time who was very suspicious of me. Because Father was growing me at such an alarming rate spiritually, this person became very jealous and suspicious.
No joke, at one point this particular individual even reached out to me and said “I’ve been watching you”, and honestly, after hearing that, I knew it was high time I left that church.
Why am I telling you this?
Well, Because there are so many Christians and even Christian leaders today who are using discernment as a way of being suspicious. When they don’t understand something, instead of researching and gaining knowledge about it, they become hyper suspicious and call it discernment.
And honestly, it’s so sad to see, because, at the time when I was growing spiritually myself, I had no idea what Father was doing in my life. And because I had a suspicious leader at that time who lacked knowledge of what was happening to me, I myself ended up becoming scared of what Father was doing in me.
Thankfully, Holy Spirit took me out of there, because the damage that would have happened in my spiritual life would have been worse if I remained. So I’m truly glad I didn’t stay.
Discernment Is Not Suspicion
The bible says we should test every spirit (1 John 4), and it also gives us a way of testing each spirit. But sadly, I often see believers who use that scripture out of context to justify their suspicion. Instead of discerning out of love, they become hyper-religious and even begin to label people as “true vs false Christians”. And as a result of this judgmental character, many true Christians who were once passionately seeking the Lord have given up on the Church.
There are many times in my Christian walk where I got attacked by the enemy without even realizing it. And oftentimes, whenever those attacks came, Father would reveal it to some believers so they could step in and pray for me.
However, some of them would become very suspicious of me and even go as far as pulling away and gossiping as their method of discerning. And honestly, it ended up causing a ton of damage in the end.
This behaviour is so common in the church and sadly, I still see it happen quite frequently even on social media.
Christians are not perfect people. I myself fall short quite often. But does that mean I don’t love God? NO!
And if someone becomes suspicious of me because I happen to fall short at some point in my journey, then it’s their lack of knowledge playing a role in their discernment.
With that being said, there are 9 gifts mentioned in the bible given by the Holy Spirit (..see 1 Corinthians 12) and one of this gift is the discerning of spirits.
Often times, when a person receives a spiritual gift, they need to stir it up by exercising it and becoming fully trained in it, so that they don’t abuse the gift and operate from a lack of understanding.
But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. – Hebrews 5:14
Unfortunately, not a lot of believers go through training. Because there are so many today who are walking around untrained and judgmental. And as a result, people who truly need help aren’t being set free.
I personally go through training to exercise the gifts Father has deposited in me. I’ve read countless books and joined countless webinars to exercise my gifts. And as a result of that, it has helped me grow in the area of discernment.
So please if you are a believer reading this, I beg you to not become suspicious. If God reveals something to you and you don’t understand it, ask Him to guide you into understanding. Because if you become suspicious of others, that would not do you any good.
There are many souls in bondage who need to be set free as a result of what you carry. But if you are suspicious and lack knowledge, it would be very difficult for the Lord to use you as an agent of change.
You are not perfect either. So each time you feel the need to judge or become suspicious of someone as a way of discerning, let go of your pride and remember where you came from before Jesus saved you.
People want to be understood not judged and criticized, especially if they are under attack by the enemy. You don’t know what goes on in people’s personal lives that they rarely speak about. So before you suspect, have an understanding heart.
