I made this vegan green smoothie recipe using spinach, banana, ground flaxseeds and almond milk – but don’t worry if you don’t have all these ingredients on hand because there are lots of variations on this recipe!
Today’s smoothie, aside being vegan, is gluten-free and dairy-free. It’s also packed full of all the goodness you need to get your day started right.
The base of this smoothie is almond milk and banana. Almond milk has a mild taste, so it blends perfectly with the other flavors in this smoothie. Banana adds creaminess to keep you feeling satisfied for longer than fruit alone would.
The spinach adds a healthy dose of vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C and iron to this vegan green smoothie recipe – plus it gives it a beautiful green color that makes it so pretty! But don’t worry, you can’t taste them at all!
I added some L-glutamine powder in there because I’ve been paying a lot of attention to my gut health and immune system. This is completely optional if you don’t have it, but I personally have been loving how my body has been feeling since I started paying more attention to my health. Hence why I incorporated it.
Making Green Smoothies Healthy
Like I mentioned earlier, Green smoothies are an excellent way to get your greens in. I personally make green smoothies several times a week. I love how it gives me tons of nutrients and makes me feel energized. I’ve been making green smoothies for years, and here are the three things I do to make sure they are as healthy as possible:
Use organic ingredients whenever possible: This is especially important if you use leafy greens such as spinach and kale because these can have higher levels of pesticide residue. It’s also good to buy organic produce when it is not in season, because it is often cheaper when it’s out of season (and therefore less likely to be locally grown).
Buy frozen fruit instead of fresh fruit: Frozen fruit contains more than twice the amount of antioxidants compared to fresh fruit. The reason for this is that freezing preserves the fruit at its peak ripeness, which preserves its antioxidant content (Source) . Freezing also breaks down cell walls, which makes it easier for our bodies to absorb nutrients from the fruits and vegetables we eat. And because frozen fruits are picked at their peak ripeness, they taste better than fresh ones most of the year!
