I’m currently typing this post in my Engineering circuits class. I should be paying attention, but I decided to open up my laptop and blog. Because when you have no idea what your professor is teaching, you pick up an in-class hobby to kill time. And in my case, my in-class hobby just happens to be blogging.
I was pondering on what posts to share with you guys this week and for some odd reason, this topic happened to pop out of nowhere. And given the fact that I can literally count the number of female engineering students in my department on one finger, I felt why not give it a shot?
So for today’s post, I’d be sharing 5 things they don’t tell you about being a female Engineering student.
LIFE AS A FEMALE ENGINEERING STUDENT

1.) WE ARE STILL GIRLY
I’d be honest. My freshman year, I was the preppy student who woke up 2 hours before lectures to get her makeup on fleek. Don’t judge me. Because like every other female in college, I too embrace my femininity.
There’s this stigma that females in Engineering are geeky and tomboy-ish and know nothing about makeup or beauty. But that could only be further from the truth.
We love makeup and fashion. And yes, we also keep up with the latest trends in beauty. We are not manly like most people like to believe.
2.) WE SOMETIMES FEEL THE PRESSURE TO PERFORM
There’s just something about being in a predominantly male field that makes a lady feel the need to perform.
Thankfully, these days, a lot of women are catching up and enrolling into STEM-related majors.
3.) GROUP PROJECTS MAKE US FEEL AWKWARD
Most of our team members are males. If we’re lucky, we might have another female engineering student. But oftentimes, we don’t. And it gets awkward.
4.) WE ARE NOT ALL SUPER-INTELLIGENT
Due to the small percentage of females in the engineering department, this often causes other students (including our professors) to assume we’re all geniuses. But that’s not entirely true.
Yes, our courses are more challenging than other majors (which causes us to become deep thinkers), but that doesn’t mean we know it all.
I can’t tell you how many times people have assumed I’m an Einstein solely for the fact that I’m in the Engineering field.
5.) OUR DATING LIFE SUCKS
You’d think because of the large percentage of males in our department our dating life would be awesome. But honestly, that could only be further from the truth.
Some dudes get intimidated by us, while some think we’re stuck up. Either way, our dating life is full of many struggles.
Plus, we barely have any social life due to countless hours of studying. So don’t think we have our relationship life figured out.
Let me know in the comments some of your struggles as a female engineering student.
